Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | Used to get some oat straw from a guy who was growing it for seed. Hardly any oats planted for grain around here, just hay. But it was good feed. Seems that the straw is always green here when its combined, so if it is swathed right after the combine it is still somewhat green and sweet. We fed it instead of grain hay, 2-3 bales of straw and a bale of alfalfa. Not sure it would be the same in your conditions, but if it's palatable thats the biggest hurdle. Now I'm feeding cornstalk bales or grass straw and while it's supposed to be better feed value wise, they don't eat it as well. | |
