The RAID setup you describe is exactly what the NAS is in my post above. I got one for the exact same reason as you: I don't trust commercial cloud backup and my internet connection had a terribly slow upload speed for the files that I had. If you happen to get a Synology NAS, www.synoforum.com is an extremely helpful forum.
