it sounds like you need to set the jumpers on the hard drives to set the old one to be a slave and the new one to be the master drive this is based on the fact that when you reverse them the old one is found and works.......you did not say if it also finds the new one, but if it does not find the new one then set it to be a slave with the jumpers and if it finds it and the old one then that is the issue.....then when you reverse the drives on the ribbon cable (or what ever is in a laptop to connect the drives to the mother board) you can set the jumpers on the drives to make the old the slave and the new the master
