Pay attention the next time you unplug the 500 or use a switch to remove the power. Notice how the LEDs blink in a conbtrolled sequence? That would indicate to me, there is a charged capacitor in the system, that holds enough power to properly close out any files that may be in the process of being written to the internal memory or a USB thumb drive.
Now, if you had a switch that needed to be used to ensure a proper and orderly shutdown, what would happen to your data in case a fuse blew and you weren't able to press the off switch first? Big possibility of data loss. This way, it doesn't matter: any condition that results in loss of power, gets things shut down orderly. In the business, it's called 'Fail-safe'.
