Manola,Ab, Ca | I made mine 3”. No real reason other than it covers the shelf edge and gives a decent lip. I screwed the front to the shelf to increase strength. This is completely overbuilt but I usually end up doing that, I hate having structural failure.
I had no plans, just built it to fit the space and use the materials and tools I had available. I have attached another picture of it completed.
