East of Broken Bow | Slide hammer.
The center part that is threaded for a bolt is an 'insert'. Thread a bolt into it, and attach a slide hammer. If you are lucky (extremely lucky) the whole bearing will pull out, and then you can press out the insert.
What generally happens to me, though, is the insert pops out, so you remove the insert from the bearing on both ends, then use a long piece of sucker rod or shafting as a punch, and drive the bearing out, clear from the other end. I have gotten an axle bearing puller attachment for my slide hammer, on the hopes it would pull these bearings, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.
Oh, and there will be a little 'lip' that the bearing rides against. Make sure when you start hammering, that your long 'punch' is pressing against the bearing, and not the lip, as you will distort it.
Alternatively, you can take the bearing apart, and weld a bead on the inside of the outer race, and it will about fall out as it cools. The new bearings will go in easier if put in freezer, as well. | |
