I once had a new sweep auger motor ground through the shaft, and it was because a wire on the winding came loose, and got pinched between the armature and magnets (I think I got the terms right - the wire pinched between the part on the shaft that spins, and the stationary part attached to the housing). Made me grateful for proper grounding.
