Subject: Why would an electric motor ground through the shaft?

Oregon
A brand new 2,000 HP irrigation motor ran ground current through a shaft bearing located outside the motor case (and welding the bearing) on its first run.

Assuming everything is wired correctly and sized correctly, what is happening inside the motor for current to travel either out of the case and then ground back through the bearing and down the shaft into the water or down the shaft, out through the bearing and into the pump station framework?
