I see that there are multiple responses along this line, but I would just about bet you that you'll never do as well on your own as you will with proper representation.  The attorneys in this line of work all know each other and all know the company attorneys and the companies are not scared or worried about people negotiating on their own.  In the pipeline deal I referenced above, some other people took their issues all the way to eminent domain in the courts.  The final outcome for them was significantly less than people with representation settled for, plus they got paid almost 2 years later.  Think multiples much higher than double.  I'm no fan of lawyers and they make a killing in these situations, but in my opinion you're leaving money on the table without one.
