Problem with theory is that I have that problem too and I plant all conventional hybrids so for me it can’t be RIB corn. I call them runt plants that would be better off if not even there. Some years worse than others but always have some. For me, planting depth doesn’t eliminate them, I strip till but have them when I’m spot on in the center of strip and also when I get off a little. I think it’s a combination of some seeds having poor vigor, some get a hole drilled through the seed by wire worms after germination that stunts plant, or any number of diseases. Maybe the seed got planted in an air pocket, seed oriented in some way, fertilizer burn on a seed here and there? All I know is that I haven’t been able to eliminate the runts and if I could I think I could add another 5 bu to the acre. I wonder if Hula and Dowdy ever have any?
