The 30" row plots are our control plots where we we metered out the canola seeds precisely and will control weeds with cultivation.

The other treatment in the study is more experimental. This afternoon, a similar rate of canola seed will be metered through the small seed box of a JD 8200 drill and scattered while a diverse mix of non-winter hardy CCs is planted using the large seed box. My goal is for the non-winter hardy CCs to serve as a nurse crop, suppressing annual weeds, increasing winter survival and enhancing nutrient availability for the canola in the spring.

We used this general approach last fall with winter rapeseed. I planted a diverse mix of CCs through the large seed box and 2 lbs/a of rapeseed through the small seed box. In the spring we had a good stand of nearly weed free rapeseed.
