One thing we learned when our barn was broken into is that thieves who are stealing items to pawn will usually not steal corded items if the cord has electrical tape on it, or the outer insulation is obviously broken. In Indiana it is illegal for a pawn whop to buy or sell anything with a damaged or modified electrical cord.
We wrapped all electrical cords (regardless of damaged or not) with large amounts of tape. Also used a color that contrasts well with the cord (easier to see that it is taped).
