| As an owner of a 496 disk for the last 15 years I have rebuilt it several times. The full spools are probably okay. The split spools can be worn if the bearing it surrounds is bad. The weakest link in the 496 is the bearings. Check all of them for cracked races. We have tried to replace the bearings with the ones of asian origins with poor results. We spend alot of time wire brushing all the parts so there is no dirt or rust in between anything before reassembly.. Stand the gangs on end when you tighten them then set them down and rap them with a mall while tightening some more. I am not an expert on many things, but if you own a 496 you will know how to change bearings. | |
