We have done something similar to what jd1783 described to several tractors. Be careful to smooth edges of steel used so the chrome on the cylinder is not damaged by rough metal. A pad like a heavy tape could help as a liner . Aluminum cylinder donuts stacked up to fill the void works good , but they are only available to go over about a 1 1/2 “ shaft max. Bigger shafts require something else.
