These aren't typical "switches" but magnetic hall effect devices. That is,they are non-contacting devices. The shift lever moves magnets that come in close proximity to different sensors mounted on a circuit board.
I've not taken one apart to clean it, but you might make sure that a magnet hasn't moved, or come loose.
