The cost is inversely proportional to your electrical ability. The smaller 12K generators (runs your well, heat and lights) can be had for $2-2500 used and if you go larger (60K+) often less dollars. You'll need a transfer switch which are available on ebay, etc. I did a 60K generac that had no enclosure for $1500. I put it in a small shed and bought an ebay (or FB can't remember) transfer switch. I had to get a board and coil for the switch but it the initial price was cheap (convert from 480 to 220v). Probably the most work I've had to do is rigging a radiator fan since the original was bent into a pretzel. It works nice.

The 12K generators often come with a transfer switch and you just wire various breakers through the transfer switch "breaker box" instead of your home breaker box.

Other options are just set up a manual transfer switch and use a pto generator run off a tractor. It's obviously not instant on, but is pretty cheap.
