And then you get into the whole...........how many hours were you at what temp. I've got a digital calculator (that I didn't set up this year) That takes minute by minute snap shots and calculates GDUs. It is far more accurate than just taking the high and low of the day.
But honestly............for simplicity sake............I like your method too.
