I'm going to have to disagree with you. Guys that fix things themselves has provided me with 40+ years of employment. I can't tell you how many times someone has given me a box of parts and said I got it apart for you but cant get it back together.

A/C is a good project for people to do themselves, generally they bought a good set of gauges for about $29.95 and some r134a. Just add a can or 3 and see if it works. Have one in the shop right now that the owner added enough to the system that it locked the compressor. We pulled about 8 lbs out of a 4 lb system. It will be about a $1500 repair by the time we get the system cleaned out and running. All it really needed was the evaporator cleaned, it was filled with dirt because the cab filter was missing and it would freeze in about 20 minutes of running.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are a lot of people that are very capable or repairing most anything. But, there are a few out there that should have never been sold a pair of pliers.
