Here's what I've found works...1 pt of Flexstar (Fomesafen) with COC and 2 or 3 days later hit them with a quart of Basagran (Bentazon). The fomesafen burns them and makes them look like they don't feel very good and then the bentazon fries them crisp. That holds them off from going to seed until the fall. I don't know why it works but never had any luck with just fomesafen, and bentazon usually does a decent job but not as good as the combo. I usually spot spray the patches with bentazon, it'll make the beans look dead but so far they come out of it unless the thistles were thick enough to already snuff them out.
