They did away with direct payments because we were supposed to be weaned off. I'll never look a gift horse in the mouth but it's kind of hard to know what the to pay for land or what amount you're comfortable renting for when we're getting into a cycle now where you bank on getting a hefty government check. Talking to a fellow farmer in my area he said "you know rent really ought to be no more than $60/acre with the way prices are". He's not wrong but he's overlooking the fact that we've been getting around $60/acre from the govt these past few years.

How and when the bandaid gets ripped off I do not know. Maybe higher prices will save the day before that happens but it's hard to see that playing out with China not living up to the trade deal thus far and tough talk on both sides.
