I kept a calf that was born with a front leg pulled up under him like a chicken wing. It wouldn't extend, and was half the size of other leg. Calf wanted to live, so I pulled him off mother and raised him in calf pen. Was able to turn him out with a small pen of calves. When he got to 550 lbs. he was getting too big and hard to support his weight on other front foot. We then butchered him. I figured my deformed calf was caused by Lupine poisoning. I've three neighbors that were hit with Lupine this calving season. Some are close to 20% affected, I think they have put most the calves down, also lost a few cows of the cows that couldn't birth the calves they found out on the desert. |
