southern thumb of MicMichigan
Side dress all of your n. Cut your rate a bit save the input dollars for lime and or drain tile. Can raise 125 bushel corn on 50 lbs applied n. So push it to 75 lbs of n in one side dress app. I strongly feel corn with fertilizer banded or starter in row makes weak rooted plants. If plants search a bit early on for all nutrients then they handle weather stress much better later in season when yield is actually put on. Most all of these researches of starter and pre applied fertilizer are paid for by industry. In these times of lower crop prices it is also harder to pencil out higher inputs. Takes a lot more 3.00 corn to pay then 5.00 corn. Roi of starter is never good on corn when under the 4.00 price point. Now if corn goes back up over 4.00 then pour it to it and hope it doesn't dry up. Corn needs 75% of its nutrients in its last 25% of growth. N is volatile to water in eastern upper corn belt water is almost always plentiful. Western guys (dryland) is a different ball game.
