Concrete is great. Wood chips can do well. Don't spread it like gravel. Eighteen inches or more. My sons corbitt waterer was getting pretty rooted out this winter. He dug out around it and put 5 or 6 tons of rock around it. Then he put 18 inches of wood chips around it. Working good so far but will add chips every so often.
