coast of Maine
John you are correct on most of herring life, some are alewife and they breed in fresh water and return to the sea.Much perhaps most herring are used for lobster bait here in Maine, the volume of Bait is beyond and the cost is very high to lobstermen. They have all most all stopped lobstering as there is near zero market for them due to the virus.Price sub 4$ lb.When its cheaper than beef they lose money. Some make a great living but some have $500,000 boats.
