Spreading micros is a terrible thing to do just for the reasons you state. And if 1 pound would do the job 2x2", you need quite a bit more to get the same response with a broadcast application. So you need more/acre and there is a good chance you won't get it spread evenly. The more I think about it the more I like the idea of the Gandy Air Spreader. There is not a typical fertilizer spreader ever going to spread micros at 5# evenly.

That is why a lot of micros are applied 2x2" , or as infurrow liquid. You get a better uniformity, and better uptake by the plant because it is where the roots are.
