I basically got forced into upgrading mine just this past week due to something getting corrupted on the HD, didn't appear to be a virus either. Simple HD swap and the lovely windows 10 USB install drive and presto, old PC working again.
I had been using Webroot, guess the wife liked it on her laptop. Previously was using Norton, yeah, they are a PITA. Used to be great years ago not sure what happened now maybe just riding the name down to the bottom?
Other option is to upgrade windows, yeah, I know probably not the best, I felt the same way. (When computer was new windows 8 was out but I opted for a bare bones kit that I was free to put 7 on instead.) No idea if everything will work the same or even continue to work but seems to be one of the few options.
