but there are reasons they quit supporting it - the security patches are too difficult or impossible to implement.
other thing that you can do is have good backups for anything that is important on that computer ... then if it is taken over or hijaaked - you just unplug it and throw it away.
but if you are using credit cards or doing financial stuff on that computer - just remember someone may break in and just "watch" you for a while to gather information.
