"edge on" shanks purpose?

The drill is winged up so I took the picture at eye level and then rotated it so the shank would be up and down. The coulter you see is actually hanging down but it is an opening coulter for the seed opener in the next row back. We do have soil levelers on the back rank.

The opener is a Case IH PPX opener that is or nearly is the same as the Anderson opener. As far as I'm aware several companies make an edge on type opener. It is the style of how it attaches versus being a company like the Knock on points. The shanks are one of the styles that Case IH offers.

The two 1/2 inch bolts are what holds the entire opener in place. There is a roll pin but it only changes the point on the front. There are rivets and bolts that hold the rest of the pieces in place.

No problem on the photo. I need to take more so that I have a library of drill pictures.
