Subject: "edge on" shanks purpose?

just a tish NE of central ND
I have seen a couple of adds featuring older used concord air seeders that have "edge on shnaks". I understand that they are a shank that is twisted on the bottom with the bolts going in from the side. What is the real purpose or benifit of using an edge on shank? Were they made for only one type of opener or is there an adapter that is meant to bolt on them first so regular sweeps and openers fit on them?? I am assuming this type fo shank is less desireable aind of less value when trading in a concord. Is concord the only machine that used them?
