Callao, Missouri | My 02 3500 is locked all the time. Bummer for the reason you already mentioned, and I think it shortens the life of the u-joints between the ball joints.
One positive is that there is no need to get out and lock the hubs, and no worry about whether or not an autohub system engaged. Just pull into 4wd and go. Or in my case, pull into 4wd and get just far enough that it will require 2 chains to pull me back out.
