Subject: Re: 5.9 Cummins oil leak in Dodge

Yorktown, TX
I have a '96 that had a pretty bad leak, and everyone told me it was the dowel pin. Either way you have to take the front cover off and look. Sometimes the dowel pin falls out and doesn't do anything. It could be loose, or in the worst case scenario, it could have fallen out and broken the case. I had a loose dowel pin and a leaking seal. Fixed them both along with some other stuff for about $1400, but the labor is what kills you (I didn't think about removing the bumper an all of that, so that time would save you some money if the shop doesn't just go with the hrs. in the book for the job). I would have done the hole thing myself if I had the time. I have heard of people even JB welding the pin into place and patching the hole in the case. Whatever is wrong, if it runs good, fix it. I don't necessarily love any part of the Dodge trucks, but that engine will keep me on their side.
