Drops are more efficient evaporation wise. But there are situations in heavy soil or on slopes where if all the water is concentrated in the 30 ft. strip under the system that a drop reaches out, the water will pool up and run downhill. A sprinkler shoots it out maybe 3 times as far, effectively giving you 3 times as much area to soak in the same amount of water per minute.
