i would say that your corn is shallow rooted in those spots, then later when corn is at max et and nutrition demands it has a very shallow depth to pull from. if its hot and dry on top its a double whammy. other crops roots respond differently and have different demands at various times.

if it is excess water? then yes tile will help drain excess water the soil cant hold. replenishing the soil root profile with moisture, rain or irraigation is a separate issue from drainimg excess water.
