Subject: RE: Drain tile question

Kingston,Mi
If those remnant drainage patterns were on air photos here, it would indicate need for field tile. Our 1941 air photos clearly showed those drainage patterns, newer photos taken mid summer don't. The original topography is mostly intact (we do very little surface grading for water management). The soil texture will affect the spacing with sandy soils allowing a greater spacing and tight, clay predominate soils needing a closer spacing. We normally aimed for 3/8 of an inch water removal on commodity crop land and a higher rate on specialty crops like vegetables.

The size and flattest grade of the main determine the ultimate drainage curve. A main that calculates at 3/8 inch removal for the area it serves will only drain that amount no matter how close beyond optimum the tile are spaced, the only additional advantage to spacing tile closer is a more uniform drained depth.
