A lot of this is pecking order socialism.

Wealthy didn’t need to work with their hands and get dirty, so people want to look wealthy so dirt on you or your clothes is seen as lower class.

Wealthy had big houses, so the McMansion is the result.

All the magazines show furniture and clothing that is perfect without a spot on it even when they are walking dragging it through grass. (evidently they didn’t have chickens)

You can see this in for instance when the wealthy women were inside and very light, no sun, women would completely cover up when outside and wear wide brimmed hats and use parasols to stay light skinned.

Then wealthy started to lay around and sunbath basically naked so fashion to show off changed. Mark of shame to be light from no sun, you must of had to work and couldn’t afford time at the beach or own a pool.

Hundreds of such examples, just remember production agriculture was one step away from the stone age in societal development.
