OP? Aren't you just as guilty looking down at the city people? Also hard to believe your kids go to a school where most live like yours. Very few farmer kids any more in rural areas.
There's a distinct difference between "looking down on people" and being incredulous.
Just last fall I had an older---farm---woman remind me that you seldom hear of "farm people" being subject to illness from salmonella. Why? Because we're exposed to some of the causative bacteria in amounts that fail to make us sick because our immune systems have been triggered to protect us. Same idea as when Louis Pasteur recognized milking maids failed to develop smallpox.
