SW Ohio
We used to farm a place inside the Cincy interstate loop, in the millionaire town of Indian hill, where the ceo's of P+G, Kroger, Cintas, and many others live. It was an old money estate with over 1500 acres in total, but when we were there only 150 tillable, the rest wooded or abandoned fields due to critter competition. It was at one time and maybe still owned by the Emery family, owners of the Netherland Hilton and Carew tower in downtown Cincy. While we were there farming in the late 80's, they put in a short new street with maybe ten lots and took out about 30-40 acres total of mostly woods. I heard they sold enough logs to pay for the paving of the street, lots of walnuts. The lots were sold by the lot starting at $2,000,000 and up. We watched one house go up as we were planting one spring, nosed around one evening and counted twelve toilet stubs roughed in, three stories high with an "acre" of glass on the front, five car attached garage with a double deep ten car detached garage. I think today no one farms the ground, except for maybe some horse stables and small truck gardens spots. there are many other isolated farms around Cincy proper, even a dairy next to the GE engine plant, and lots of scattered fields in the industrial area on the north side. Ohio real estate tax situation favors farming anything that can be on that high dollar ground, $50-75/acre for farming versus thousands/acre if not.
