I also have a 250. I don't have a problem with the unit draining the battery.
If you have an EZ Steer 500, and the 250 is powered by the Steer, I can understand the switch if it's to kill power to the Steer (which should be hooked directly to the battery), but if you just have the 250, something doesn't sound right.
Ez guide 250...no signal/gps
