The difference between 4 hi and $ low is in Low you engage a planetary gear set to give you gear reduction. Transfer cases are one of the most reliable systems on a truck so I would not worry about wear.
I would do as you suggest and install a switched circuit in the ABS fuse and that will disable the system when activated.
