Subject: RE: Oats/Alfalfa

Southwest Michigan
I have had good results with oats for a nurse crop. I farm a lot of hilly ground and I like the way the oats root quick to hold the soil from washing while the alfalfa getts a hold.
I do believe blustery is correct thou, if I cut the combination for hay or silage before the oats mature, I think the stand is better than if I leave it for grain.

I did both last year, one field on one side of the road one field on the other. The field that I took the oats to grain, made me more money per acre(oats, straw and one cut of light hay) but the alfalfa did not get as big and robust this spring. The other field, had similar tonnage( all feed type hay)but less value, but the alfalfa is bigger and seems more aggressive this spring.
