This "new math" method of explaining the process of multiplication is indeed accomplishing the same thing as the "old math" formula. It just adds understanding of the process and what is actually being done by the algorithm. If elementary school students understand what the algorithm is doing, algebra problems like (2x+5)(5x+7) will be extremely easy because they already know how to picture it with the box.
