Subject: RE: Went to the sale, and some herefords came home

Driftless SW Wisconsin

I'm not going to switch away from Herefords, they work very well in my business. My buying one black heifer as an experiment (though not statistically very valid experiment) is not going to affect my basic approach. From my Fleckvieh bull on Hereford cows experiment I do see some real value to F1s and heterosis.

However that came at the price of a dramatic and worrisome attitude change in my Fleck bull to the point where my whole family was concerned about being in the pasture and he had to go. We've never had that concern with my Schu-Lar Hereford bulls.

At the Angus sale yesterday there was yearling bull after yearling bull with 13-1400 lb yearling weights. That bull is designed for a whole different business than my primarily grass-fed, rotationally grazed, birth-to-plate beef business.

Net profit, for the cow/calf guy and the feeder is another topic.

Glad to see you bought some Herefords, Gary.  Carlson has shown some pictures on here of some very nicely finished fed Hereford steers.
