southern MN | ‘Here’ gravel becomes trapped between the manure pack and the natural clay soil and pretty much liquifies in the moisture and is worthless, it scrapes right up with the manure pack it just doesn’t act like a gravel road bed, it acts more like a liquid that you can’t make useable. You end up hauling it all away and then you are beating the small rock through the manure spreader. Ugh.
The other materials you mention can work, not ideal but it is what it is.
