Johnson grass can be new from seedlings or regrowth from the rhizones below the ground. Some of the PEs do a good job on seedling Jg but have no effect on rhizome. Best practice is a late post spray with roundup. Jgrass needs to be about 18 inches tall before spraying otherwise it will burn off and come back if sprayed too short. When sprayed too early the the chemical will not translocate to the rhizome. Remember the rhizome is breaking dormancy in the spring and is sending stored energy up and you want glyphosate to go down to root. You have to wait until it gets 18 -24 inches tall to get a good kill. Depending on how severe your problem is you might need to make two in crop applications. Then follow up in the fall after harvest. Fall is best time to spray before plants go dormant ahead of a killing frost. Repeat next year!
