I got along real well with a black Hiniker with cut always and a newer type shear on the back. Mine has shields and they did a good job of keeping clods off the row. I always thought you needed the cut away discs to make enough loose dirt to push back into the row. I was a firm believer in covering weeds up.

Don’t know where you are at, but I could let my cult go. I am in western Iowa.
