Subject: RE: Calves born dead?

south central IOWA
Their eyes turn white from lack of oxygen. The one I found yesterday submerged in the slop that I thought was dead had white eyes. He didn't really start breathing until I got him under warm water and the white went away after a few minutes.

Finding one on bedding with no other apparent problems, I'd guess the sac was over his head and mom didn't get it licked off in time but she eventually did.

Could also be a breech calf that the cow was able to push out. Had one of those a couple years ago that I came up on just as she was getting it out. I couldn't have timed it any better but failed in getting the calf to breath.

I bet if a person seen a 100 births every year and never intervened no matter what, they'd probably see some pretty amazing things happen. I'm just glad I don't see all of them happen cause I'd probably always think the calf will never survive.
