Madison Co. Virginia | An easy way to see if the calf has ever attempted to stand, is look at the hooves. To avoid damage to the mother's birth canal, the calf's hooves are rounded over with a soft tissue. Any standing attempt will tear this protective coating on the bottom of the hoof, and leave it looking rough instead of smoothly rounded.
