Pierce county WI | Maybe a little, but the vast majority of it was farmers wanting to be the big shot. The dairy industry in Wisconsin here has been decimated by expansion. There's still just as much milk, but it's concentrated on a few farms. It used to be when the next generation would come into the operation, they would take over the physical responsibilities and the older generation would do much less of the physical work. It seems the mentality of the last few years is let's expand, and have bigger machinery and more hired labor and then the younger generation can drive around in the pickup and manage. In crop farming it was doing anything to get more acres, and small operations being competitive. Then when that bto goes bankrupt, they get to start over or another large operator starts up. US agriculture has matured, there's lots of generational income, it's easy for a large operation to grow. | |
