I think you are overthinking this ppm is a percentage not an amount so the ppm of something in a soil does not change according to how much soil was sampled only how many parts per million are in the sample. By taking a 4" vs 6" vs 12" you are just looking at a smaller window. There are still the same number of pounds of dirt in an acre inch which is what you are basing the x2 off of to figure how many pounds of something are in the soil.
