Subject: RE: Dummy question for ppm conversion

Austin MN
The standard is a 6 inch soil test you multiply by 2 since these is approximately 2 million pounds of soil per acre 6 inches deep. If you did a 12 inch sample you would multiply by 4 since that is double the depth. In theory if you did 3 inch sample the parts per million reading would be the same as pounds per acre. Divide the 2 by 6 to get .333 million pounds per inch. multiply by your 4 inch sample depth and thats a factor of 1.3333. So if your soil test says 30 ppm phosphorus you would have 39.9 lbs of phosphorus per acre. in this example dont forget to convert phosphorus to phosphate (p2o5) by multiplying 39.9 by 2.3 since we buy fertilizer buy p2o5. Hope this all helps
